Lot 13:
Description
A lot of four polychrome Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) on paper by Toyohara Chikanobu (楊洲周延, 1848–1912), from his renowned series “Azuma fūzoku fuku tsukushi” (東風俗 福つくし), translated as “Twenty-six Prints Constituting an Album” or “Manners and Customs of the East”. These prints, executed in the nishiki-e style, date to the Meiji period (1868–1912). Each print depicts a distinct genre scene: one features a dynamic procession outside a castle gate, another an interior domestic setting with two women, a third an interior scene featuring women and mice, and the fourth a bustling street market. Japanese characters are present in various cartouches, including vertical and fan-shaped formats, indicating titles, series names, and artist signatures.
