Description

A Japanese polychrome woodblock print by Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi (一勇斎国芳画), from the series Kannon Reigenki (観音霊験記), dating to the late Edo period. The print depicts a dramatic scene with a prominent samurai figure seated on a mat, holding a drawn sword, flanked by two additional figures appearing fallen, all set against a green ground. Above the main scene, a smaller rectangular inset illustrates a landscape with traditional buildings and trees. Extensive Japanese text is present throughout the print, including the series title cartouche, additional script identifying ‘萬貞’, and the publisher’s mark ‘南傳馬町山庄板’ (Minami Demmachō Yamashō han).

Condition report:

Overall paper toning and discoloration, particularly noticeable in the upper section. A visible horizontal crease extends across the middle of the print. General edge wear is present, with minor tears or losses. The colors appear faded, consistent with light exposure, and show significant variation between the two provided images, suggesting differing print states or light degradation.
