Description

A pair of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Utagawa Kunisada, from the series ‘Genji Go Shu Yojō’ (源氏後集余情), dating from the late Edo or early Meiji period. Each print depicts figures within a narrative context, potentially from or inspired by the Tale of Genji. One print features a woman standing, the other a man kneeling, both attired in elaborate kimonos, set against a background with falling leaves. Visible markings include a prominent red rectangular cartouche on each print bearing the series title, alongside a square cartouche with additional Japanese characters. The artist’s signature, ‘歌川国貞画’ (Utagawa Kunisada ga), and a publisher’s seal are visible in a cartouche at the lower left of each image.
