Description

A Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), titled ‘Kobayakawa Takakage Yūzan Mondo no Zu’ (Kobayakawa Takakage and the Mountain Tengu’s Dialogue) from the series ‘Shin Sanjūroku Kaisen’ (New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts). The print depicts a large bald figure in red robes with a long beard, possibly a monk or Tengu, standing over three diagonal panels containing smaller, multi-figured scenes. The signature ‘芳年’ (Yoshitoshi) with two red seals is visible in the lower left margin. The print is on paper and characteristic of the Ukiyo-e style. The verso reveals bleed-through of the print colors.

Condition report:

Overall paper toning consistent with age. Areas of pigment fading, particularly in the dark background. Minor surface soiling and foxing present. Visible handling marks. Sheet edges appear slightly uneven or worn.
