Description
A Japanese tantō, certified by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (NBTHK) Kanteisho as being made by Muraoka Shigeji of Tanshu Fukuchiyama in the Kaei 6 (1853) era. The steel blade features a visible hamon and hada, and is extensively decorated with intricate horimono (engravings) on both sides of the base, extending onto the two-hole nakago. It is presented in a complete koshirae consisting of a black lacquered saya and a ray-skin (samé) wrapped tsuka with a yellow sageo. The lot also includes a plain wooden shirasaya. The accompanying yellow NBTHK appraisal certificate is dated Reiwa 6 (2024) and identifies the sword as a tantō with a length of 9 sun 4 bu. The certificate also bears an older registration stamp from the Kyoto Prefecture Board of Education dated Showa 47 (1972).

Condition report:
The sword and its mountings appear to be in good, well-preserved condition. The blade shows minor signs of age-appropriate wear consistent with its vintage. The koshirae is complete with some minor surface wear to the lacquer and ray-skin. The shirasaya is intact.
