Description

A pair of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, likely forming a diptych, depicting warrior figures from the late Edo or early Meiji period. Each print is executed on paper using multiple colors. Both sheets bear the series title “太平記英勇傳” (Taiheiki Eiyūden) within an oval cartouche at the top right, accompanied by extensive columnar descriptive text. The left print features a prominent bearded male figure identified as “辰川左近勝政” (Tatsukawa Sakon Katsumasa), in elaborate patterned robes, pointing forward, accompanied by two smaller figures. The right print portrays a standing male figure holding a sword, identified as “大中宮兵衛重治” (Ōnakamiya Hyōe Shigeharu), depicted within an interior setting. Each print is signed “一勇斎國芳画” (Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi ga) and includes publisher’s and censor seals.

Condition report:

Overall paper toning and pigment fading consistent with age. Visible creasing, particularly prominent on the left sheet. Minor edge wear and some small losses are present, typical for historical paper prints.
