Description

A Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), titled ‘Ōgyūmono’ from the series ‘Setsugekka’, dated Meiji 4th Year (1871). The multi-panel composition depicts a central scene of a figure with a sword on a red-lacquered bridge under a full moon. The upper tripartite section includes two smaller figural vignettes and a circular cartouche. Inscriptions along the left margin note the date ‘明治四年’ (Meiji 4th Year) and the artist’s signature ‘芳年画’ (Yoshitoshi ga). The series title ‘雪月花’ (Setsugekka) and specific title ‘櫻牛者’ (Ōgyūmono) are also visible.
