Description

This lot comprises two multi-sheet Japanese woodblock print triptychs, executed in ink on paper in the Ukiyo-e style, consistent with the Edo or Meiji period. The top triptych depicts a dynamic land battle scene with numerous figures engaged on stairs and open ground. The bottom triptych illustrates a naval engagement featuring multiple ships and warriors on a turbulent sea. Each print displays bold outlines and areas of once vibrant, now somewhat faded, color. Visible Japanese characters are present in various cartouches and alongside the imagery, likely denoting artist signatures, publisher marks, and titles. Evidence of prior mounting is visible on the verso, which also bears handwritten Japanese characters.

Condition report:

The prints exhibit signs of age, including general color fading, notable foxing and staining, particularly on the versos, minor creasing, and some small losses or tears along the edges and at the joins between sheets.
