Description
Henry VII (1485-1509), gold Angel of six Shillings and eight Pence, type IV, St Michael slaying dragon, beaded circle and Latin legend surrounding, initial mark crosslet (1504-05) both sides, double saltire stops and abbreviated legend both sides +hEnRIC’xx DI’xx GRA’x REXxx AGL’ xZx FR’x x, one final saltire by nimbus, rev. ship sailing right, quartered shield upon hull, cross above, h to left, rose to right, legend surrounding, +PERxx CRVCE’xx TVA’xx SALVAxx nOSxx XPE’x RED’, 5.12g (cf.Schneider 535; SCBI Ashmoleon cf.23:45-51 Henry VII; N.1698; S.2186). Lightly toned though perhaps once cleaned, well struck and centred, good very fine.
Condition report:
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse Henry by the Grace of God, King of England and France; and on the reverse By Thy cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer.The cross crosslet initial mark was in use from the Spring of 1504 to as late as November 1505, a period of time in which some £143,000 of gold was struck including the large gold Sovereigns as well as Angels and Half-Angels.
