g George VI (1936-52), gold Proof Five Pounds, 1937, bare head left, initials HP below neck for Humphrey Paget, GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP:, rev. St George and dragon right, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue, edge plain (Hill T46; L&S 1; Bull EGC 1454; WR 435; S.4074). Once cleaned with faded cloud spots at top of reverse field and in exergue, larger faint patch in obverse field in front of face, otherwise brilliant, some scuffs on cheek, good extremely fine.

The Latin legend translates as George the Sixth by the grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India.These plain edge Proof gold Five Pounds were produced to celebrate the Coronation of King George VI on the 12thMay 1937 as part of gold Proof sets, with a mintage of 5,501 pieces, they were technically patterns as they did not have a milled edge like earlier gold Five Pounds of other reigns.
