James I (1603-25), gold Unite of twenty Shillings, second Coinage (1604-19), second crowned half-length armoured figure right, holding orb and sceptre, surrounded by beaded circles and legend, initial mark lis (1604-05), .IACOBVS. D;G; MAG; BRIT; FRAN; ET. HIB; REX., rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, I to left, R to right, .FACIAM. EOS. IN. GENTEM. VNAM., 9.94g (Schneider 22; N.2083; S.2618). Lightly toned, well centred and struck with just one weak area around cheek of King and at corresponding part of reverse shield, otherwise perhaps once cleaned, good very fine.


Condition report:

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse James by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland and on the reverse as I will make them one Nation, a legend that is exclusive to this reign.The original records of gold output for this period cover just 6 months of use for mint mark lis in the second coinage to a total of £137,475 of gold from 11th November 1604 until 31st May 1605 and in use for the Unite and its fractions.
