Description
James I (1603-25), gold Laurel of twenty Shillings, third coinage (1619-25), fourth laureate and draped bust variety left, bracket style ties at rear of bust, value behind, initial mark lis (1623-24), legend surrounding IACOBVS D: G: MAG: BRI: FRA: ET HIB: REX, rev. long cross fourchée over crowned quartered shield of arms, terminal mark lis, FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM VNAM, no stops in legend, 9.11g (Schneider 86; N.2114; S.2638C). Once cleaned perhaps though with some light tone and spots, flaw in drapery, a little double struck, a bold to good very fine.
Condition report:
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse James by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland and on the reverse as I will make them one nation, taken from the Bible.The lis mint mark was unusually used for only eight months, and original pyx trial records show that £241,701 of 22 carat crown gold was struck for this mint mark from 17th July 1623 until 31st March 1624.
