g George III (1760-1820), gold Sovereign, 1820, open 2 in date, second laureate head right with more wiry hair, date below, Latin legend commences lower left GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:, rev. St George and dragon right, incuse BP below broken lance at lower left for designer and engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, garter motto surrounding, buckle with incuse WWP for Master of the Mint William Wellesley Pole, French motto HONI. SOIT. QUI. MAL. Y. PENSE. (Bentley 7; Hill 4; Bull EGC.906; MCE 466 ; S.3785C). Light surface marks and hairlines, some nicks and streaks on obverse, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as MS62, all housed in Royal Mint Collector Services card with certificate.

NGC Certification 2119556-037 with Sincona British Collection label.Calendar year mintage 931,994 though it is known that 1820 dated Sovereigns were struck into the year 1821 and Marsh estimated that as many as 1,170,000 of the 1821 calendar mintage could well have been 1820 dated coins. The Latin legend translates on obverse as George III by the Grace of God, King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith. The older Norman-French legend on the reverse translates as Evil to him, who evil thinks and is the motto of the chivalric Order of the Garter founded in 1348 by King Edward III.Provenance:Ex: Sincona British Collection, part 1, auction 72, 21st November 2021, lot 817.
