g George IV (1820-30), gold proof Two Pounds, 1826, bare head left, date below, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA, rev. quartered shield of arms with an escutcheon of the Arms of Hanover upon crowned ermine mantle, legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REX FID: DEF: edge inscribed in raised letters and dated, DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI SEPTIMO, 15.89g (WR 228 R2; Marsh T16; Bull EGC 957; S.3799). Removed from jewellery with severe scuffs and surface marks, all surfaces covered in tiny digs and sweated, the edge partly smoothed and repaired, cleaned and polished, otherwise good fine.

Official mintage of 400 piecesThe Latin legend on the obverse translates as George the Fourth by the Grace of God, and continuing on the reverse as King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith.By Order of Council of 14th June 1825, a new coinage was authorised consisting of Five Pound pieces, Two Pound pieces, Sovereigns, Half-Sovereigns, Crowns, Half-Crowns, Shillings and Sixpences, subsequently followed on 3rd January 1826 by the Copper issues.
