Condition report:
Mintage circa 400 pieces. The Latin obverse legend translates as George IV by the Grace of God, and on the reverse King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith. This coin exhibits the extra tuft of hair by ear in combination with the upright of letter R of GRATIA pointing to a space in the outer beading, a variety also seen in the gold Half-Sovereign. At the time Davies wrote his book in the early 1980s the proof of this variety was yet to be confirmed, it is very rare indeed.Provenance:Ex Michael Watson Collection, Dix Noonan and Webb, 29th September 2010, lot 1998.
