Description
George IV (1820-30), silver Proof Sixpence, 1826, second bare head left, with extra tuft of hair by ear, date below, legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA, rev. inverted die axis, crowned lion standing left on large crown over emblems, legend commences lower left, BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR, 2.84g (Bull 2434 R2; Davies 270 dies 1+A; ESC 1662A; S.3815). Attractively toned, practically as struck, good extremely fine.
Condition report:
Mintage circa 400 pieces.The Latin obverse legend translates as George IV by the Grace of God, and on the reverse King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith. This coin exhibits the extra tuft of hair by ear in combination with the upright of letter R of GRATIA pointing to a space in the outer beading, a variety also seen in the gold Half-Sovereign. At the time Davies wrote his book in the early 1980s the proof of this variety was yet to be confirmed, it is very rare indeed.Provenance:Ex Michael Watson Collection, Dix Noonan and Webb, 29th September 2010, lot 1998.
