Description

A commemorative “Special Edition” ephemera card personally hand-signed in black ink by Flight Lieutenant Gordon Mellor (1921–2019). Mellor served as a navigator with No. 103 Squadron, Royal Air Force, operating the Handley Page Halifax heavy bomber from RAF Elsham Wolds during the Second World War. The card features the squadron title and their English motto, “Touch me not” (the translation of the Latin Noli Me Tangere). Mellor is a significant figure in the history of RAF Bomber Command; on 22nd November 1942, his Halifax was shot down over France. He successfully avoided capture by utilising the “Comet Line” escape network, travelling through occupied France and across the Pyrenees into Spain before eventually returning to the United Kingdom. This card was produced as part of a limited series to honour veterans and support charitable causes. It serves as a fine collectable for those interested in the history of the “Evaders” and the Halifax bomber operations.

Condition report:

The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. The signature of Flight Lieutenant Mellor is clear, bold, and shows no signs of smudging. The card stock is crisp and white, with no evidence of foxing, yellowing, or corner wear. The printing is sharp and well-defined. The item is currently protected within a clear plastic Ryman-branded sleeve.
