Description

A Royal Air Force commemorative “Special Edition” card dedicated to the Avro Lancaster and No. 582 Squadron. The card features a printed double-line border in blue and identifies the squadron’s English motto translation, “We fly before marking” (the Latin motto being Praevolamus Designantes). The card is hand-signed in black ink by Flight Lieutenant Robert Pengilley, DFC. No. 582 Squadron was a specialised heavy bomber squadron formed in 1944 as part of the elite No. 8 (Pathfinder Force) Group. Flying Avro Lancasters, the squadron’s primary role was to locate and mark targets for the main bomber stream during the Allied strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe. Flight Lieutenant Robert Pengilley was a highly decorated pilot with the squadron, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for gallantry and devotion to duty during numerous sorties. This item represents a significant piece of Bomber Command ephemera, specifically relating to the high-risk operations of the Pathfinder Force.

Condition report:

The card is in excellent condition, appearing clean with sharp corners and no visible foxing or age-related discolouration. The black ink signature is bold, clear, and shows no signs of fading or smudging. The card is currently presented and protected within a clear plastic sleeve. The printing is crisp and the overall presentation is of collector quality.
