Description

A commemorative Special Edition aviation card dedicated to the Supermarine Spitfire and the operations of No. 136 Squadron, Royal Air Force. This item is of particular Commonwealth interest as it is hand-signed in black ink by Flying Officer D.J. Barnett, an Australian pilot serving with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) who was attached to the RAF during the Second World War. The card includes Barnett’s handwritten service number, 405461, and his rank, F/O (Flying Officer). No. 136 Squadron, known as the Woodpeckers, operated Spitfires within the South East Asia Command (SEAC), flying critical sorties against Japanese forces from bases in India and Burma. The card features the squadron’s official motto, Nothing is stronger, and provides historical context regarding the unit’s service in the Burma campaign. This piece serves as a personal link to the RAAF contribution to the air war in the Pacific and South East Asian theatres, often associated with the history of the Forgotten Fourteenth Army.
