Description

Royal Air Force interest. A special edition commemorative card for the Avro Lancaster heavy bomber, hand-signed by Warrant Officer Norman Gregory. The card features printed text for No. 101 Squadron, Royal Air Force, along with the English translation of the squadron motto, Mind over matter (Mens Agitat Molem). The veteran has signed the card in pencil and included the handwritten inscription: 101 Sqn. May 1944. No. 101 Squadron was a specialist unit within RAF Bomber Command. From late 1943, their Lancasters were equipped with Airborne Cigar (ABC) radio-jamming equipment intended to disrupt German night-fighter communications. These aircraft carried an additional eighth crew member to operate the equipment. Because these Lancasters had to remain on air throughout the mission to jam signals, they were easily tracked by German ground stations and night fighters, leading to the squadron suffering the highest casualty rates of any Lancaster squadron in Bomber Command.

The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. The paper is bright and clean with no visible foxing, staining, or creasing. The pencil signature and inscription are clear, sharp, and highly legible. The item is currently housed in a standard clear plastic collector\'s sleeve for protection.
