Lot 182:
Description
This is a printed commemorative Special Edition card honouring the Short Stirling heavy bomber and its service with No. 138 (Special Duties) Squadron of the Royal Air Force. Produced in the late 20th century as part of a series for aviation enthusiasts and collectors, the card features a hand-signed autograph in black ink by veteran Flying Officer P. Bellingham. No. 138 Squadron held a significant role during the Second World War, operating under the direction of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to drop secret agents and supplies into occupied territory. The Short Stirling was the RAF’s first four-engine heavy bomber, and though later superseded by the Lancaster and Halifax in main bombing roles, it remained vital for special duties and transport. The card includes the squadron motto For Freedom and a decorative blue double-line border. Transcription: SHORT STIRLING, No. 138 (Special Duties) Squadron, Royal Air Force, For Freedom, Flying Officer P. Bellingham. This Special Edition card has been personally signed by a Veteran who flew in the Short Stirling while serving with No. 138 (Special Duties) Squadron in the European Theatre of Operations. Dimensions: Approximately 148mm x 210mm.
