Description

A Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command Special Edition commemorative card dedicated to the Vickers Wellington bomber. This item is personally hand-signed in ink by Flight Lieutenant J.O. Lancaster, DFC. The card features the printed motto of No. 40 Squadron, To drive the enemy from the sky (the English translation of the Latin Hostem a caelo expellere). Joe Lancaster is a figure of significant aviation historical interest; in addition to his distinguished wartime service flying Wellingtons over Europe with No. 40 Squadron, he holds the distinction of being the first pilot to successfully use a Martin-Baker ejection seat in an emergency, following the failure of the Armstrong Whitworth AW.52 flying wing in May 1949. This ephemera piece serves as a poignant link to the aircrews of Bomber Command and the pioneering era of post-war British aviation.
