Description

A commemorative special edition card dedicated to the Short Stirling heavy bomber, personally autographed by Warrant Officer D. Baker. Baker served with the prestigious No. 75 (New Zealand) Squadron of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. This squadron holds the historical distinction of being the first Commonwealth squadron formed within Bomber Command and was the only New Zealand squadron to operate throughout the entirety of the conflict in Europe. The card features the squadron’s motto, “For ever and ever be strong,” which is the English translation of the Māori “Ake ake kia kaha.” The printed text confirms that Warrant Officer Baker flew operational sorties in the Short Stirling, a type that was the first of the British four-engine heavy bombers to enter service. As the Stirling was eventually superseded by the Lancaster and Halifax, signatures from veterans who operated this specific aircraft type are increasingly scarce. This item represents a significant piece of RNZAF and RAF Bomber Command history, documenting the contribution of New Zealand aircrew to the strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe.

Condition report:

The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. It is currently housed in a clear protective plastic sleeve which has preserved the paper from foxing, yellowing, or edge wear. The signature of Warrant Officer D. Baker is clear, bold, and executed in pencil or dark ink, showing no signs of fading or smudging. The printed borders and typography remain crisp and well-defined.
