Lot 193:
Description
This is a modern commemorative Special Edition signature card produced in the late 20th or early 21st century to honour the service of Royal Air Force veterans of the Second World War. The card is printed on white cardstock with a blue double-rule border and is dedicated to the Short Stirling, which was the first four-engined heavy bomber to enter service with the RAF. The card is hand-signed in black ink by Squadron Leader W. Lucas, a highly decorated pilot who held the Distinguished Flying Cross and was Mentioned in Despatches. There is a notable historical discrepancy on the card; the header references No. 15 Squadron and its motto Aim sure, while the descriptive text at the bottom states that Lucas flew the Stirling while serving with No. 9 Squadron in Europe. Transcribed text: SHORT STIRLING, No. 15 Squadron Royal Air Force, Aim sure, Squadron Leader W. Lucas DFC, MID. This Special Edition card has been personally signed by a Veteran who flew the Short Stirling while serving with No 9 Squadron in Europe. Dimensions: Approximately 148mm x 210mm (A5 size).
