Lot 216:
Description
This is a Special Edition commemorative card dedicated to the Avro Lancaster and No. 625 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. The squadron, which carried the motto We Avenge, was a key component of Bomber Command during the Second World War, operating from its base at RAF Kelstern. The card is personally hand-signed in black ink by Warrant Officer Frank Tolley, BEM (1921–2021). Tolley was a distinguished veteran who served as a bomb aimer on Lancaster bombers during the Allied air campaign over occupied Europe. In his later years, he became a highly respected figure in the veteran community, volunteering at the Imperial War Museum North and receiving the British Empire Medal for his services to the community. The card includes printed text verifying that it was signed by a veteran who flew in the Avro Lancaster with 625 Squadron. This item represents a poignant piece of aviation ephemera connected to one of the most iconic aircraft of the twentieth century.
Condition report:
The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. The paper stock remains bright and crisp with sharp corners and no evidence of foxing, creasing, or staining. The black ink signature of Frank Tolley is clear, bold, and has not suffered from light fading. The item is currently housed and protected within a clear plastic sleeve.
