Description

A Special Edition commemorative card dedicated to the Supermarine Spitfire and the history of No. 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force. The document is personally hand-signed in black ink by Squadron Leader J.I. Ian Blair, DFM. Blair was a highly distinguished figure within the RAF; originally serving as a wireless operator/air gunner with No. 113 Squadron, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) for his extraordinary gallantry in 1941. After his pilot was killed and the observer wounded during a mission over North Africa, Blair took control of the Bristol Blenheim and successfully landed the aircraft despite having no formal pilot training. He subsequently commissioned and qualified as a pilot, flying Spitfires with No. 602 Squadron during the European campaign. The card features the squadron title and the English translation of the motto, Beware the tormented lion. This item represents a significant piece of aviation ephemera relating to a decorated veteran of the European theatre.
