Lot 235:
Description
A special edition commemorative card dedicated to the Bristol Beaufighter strike aircraft, personally hand-signed in black ink by Flight Lieutenant Des Curtis, DFC. The card features the insignia of No. 235 Squadron, Royal Air Force, including the official squadron motto, “We strike them to the ground.” Des Curtis was a highly distinguished navigator and wireless operator within RAF Coastal Command. During his service with No. 235 Squadron, he participated in hazardous low-level anti-shipping strikes against German convoys in the European theatre of operations. He is perhaps most famously recognised for his subsequent role in the “Tsetse” Mosquito operations with No. 248 Squadron, where he flew missions using the 57mm Molins gun against U-boats. His Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) was awarded for his gallantry and devotion to duty during these intensive operations. This item serves as a significant piece of aviation ephemera, linking directly to one of Coastal Command’s most celebrated veterans.
Condition report:
The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. The card stock remains bright with sharp, clean edges and no evidence of foxing or surface wear. The signature of Flight Lieutenant Des Curtis is clear, bold, and unfaded. The item is currently housed in a protective plastic sleeve, ensuring its continued preservation.
