Description

This item is a post-war Special Edition commemorative ephemera card relating to the Hawker Hurricane aircraft and the service of No. 136 Squadron, Royal Air Force. The card is personally hand-signed in black ink by Flying Officer D.J. Barnett of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), service number 405461. The veteran has included extensive handwritten annotations providing historical details, including a reference to the College of Arms 1947 and the identification of No. 136 as The Woodpecker Sqdn. He describes the squadron insignia as a Woodpecker over flying wheel sign and notes the motto of No. 144 as Nothings too tough. The printed text on the card reads: HAWKER HURRICANE, No. 136 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Nothing is stronger. A paragraph in the lower left corner notes that Barnett flew the Hurricane while serving with the squadron in South East Asia. This piece is historically significant for its direct link to the Burma campaign and the South East Asia Command (SEAC). The card is printed on heavy white cardstock with a decorative double-line border.
