Lot 265:
Description
A special edition commemorative card dedicated to the Hawker Hurricane and the operational service of No. 249 (Gold Coast) Squadron, Royal Air Force. This card honours the veteran pilots who served during the critical Siege of Malta between 1941 and 1942. The card is hand-signed in black ink by Flight Lieutenant H.H. Moon, who has included the personal inscription “Harry Moon 249 Sqn 41/42”. No. 249 Squadron was one of the most successful and prestigious fighter units of the Second World War, famously providing the aerial defence of Malta during the height of the Mediterranean campaign. The squadron is well-known for its association with high-scoring aces such as George “Screwball” Beurling. The card features the squadron’s official motto, “With fist and heels”, and serves as a significant piece of ephemera relating to the “Day Fighter” pilots who operated under heavy blockade and bombardment.
