Lot 78:
Description
A commemorative special edition card dedicated to the Hawker Hurricane and the Second World War service of No. 81 Squadron, Royal Air Force. The card is hand-signed in black ink by Warrant Officer Eric J. Carter, a veteran pilot who flew Hurricanes with the squadron during the Russian campaign. In late 1941, No. 81 Squadron, as part of No. 151 Wing, was deployed to Murmansk under ‘Operation Benedict’. Their mission was to provide essential air cover for the Arctic convoys and to train Soviet pilots and ground crew on the Hawker Hurricane. The card features printed text in red and black, including the squadron’s motto, “Not for us alone,” and a specific dedication to the veterans who served in Russia. This is a significant piece of ephemera relating to a unique and often overlooked chapter of RAF history on the Eastern Front.
Condition report:
The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. There are no visible signs of foxing, creasing, or fading to the printed text or the card stock. The signature of Warrant Officer E.J. Carter is bold, clear, and well-centred. The item is currently housed in a protective clear plastic sleeve which has preserved its original lustre.
