Description

A rare and highly collectable special edition commemorative card dedicated to the Hawker Hurricane and No. 1 Squadron, Royal Air Force. The card features the squadron’s celebrated motto, First in all things, and is personally hand-signed in black ink by Wing Commander John Francis Durham Tim Elkington (1920–2019).

Wing Commander Elkington was a distinguished member of The Few, the group of Allied airmen who defended the United Kingdom during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Serving with No. 1 Squadron out of RAF Tangmere, Elkington flew Hawker Hurricanes and is officially credited with the destruction of a Messerschmitt Bf 109 on 16 August 1940. His wartime service was notably diverse; he later participated in Operation Benedict as part of No. 151 Wing in North Russia, where he flew Hurricanes off the deck of HMS Argus to protect the strategic port of Murmansk.

The card serves as a significant piece of aviation ephemera, providing a direct tangible link to the oldest squadron in the Royal Air Force and one of its last surviving Battle of Britain veterans.

Condition report:

The card is in excellent, near-mint condition. The card stock remains bright white and crisp with sharp, un-bumped corners. There is no evidence of foxing, staining, or adhesive marks from previous mounting. The signature of Wing Commander Elkington is bold, clear, and shows no signs of fading. The item is currently housed in a protective clear plastic sleeve to ensure its continued preservation.
