Description

This lot features a special edition commemorative card dedicated to the Hawker Hurricane and No. 134 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. The card displays the squadron motto, We shall fly through hardships, and is personally autographed in pencil by Wing Commander John Francis Durham Tim Elkington (1920–2019). Elkington was a distinguished Battle of Britain pilot who served with No. 1 Squadron before his deployment to North Russia in 1941. This deployment was part of Operation Benedict, where No. 151 Wing, consisting of 81 and 134 Squadrons, was tasked with the defence of Murmansk and the training of Soviet pilots on the Hurricane aircraft. As one of the last surviving members of the Few, Elkington’s signature is a significant addition to any collection of RAF memorabilia. This piece provides a direct link between the pivotal air battles over Britain and the vital support provided to the Eastern Front during the Second World War.

Condition report:

The card is in excellent condition, appearing clean and well-preserved. There are no visible signs of foxing, creasing, or age-related discolouration. The typography remains crisp, and the pencil signature is clear and entirely legible. The card is currently protected within a plastic sleeve.
